Northern Strand Community Trail: Regional and Local Connections
NSCT_Regional_Local_Connections_Final.pdf
(58.1 mb)
Project Scope
The aim of this project is to create a map showing both the regional and local bikeway connections to the Northern Strand Community Trail, including additional features per MassHighway’s request.
The map will be printed at ANSI D size since it will have to be large enough to fit both an overview map (regional connections) and the details of the Mystic and Malden River area.
The major design issue will be the symbolization of the map’s many lines features (bus, streets, MBTA, and categories of bikeways) without making the map look too crowded and ensuring that the Northern Strand linework is emphasized. I’m hoping that colorful Open Space and Water polygons on top of impersonal orthophotos will flesh out the map, as I believe it does with the DCR’s Alewife maps. I’m choosing to include orthophotos over topography/hill contours as a base layer for the map since the orthophotos give a better sense of the existing city infrastructure (useful to transit engineers/planners) over topography. However, including topography in the kiosk maps (future project) will be seriously considered, since elevation data is extremely meaningful to trail users.
The Northern Strand Community Trail is a rails-to-trails project currently in development. For more information or to get involved with this exciting project, visit
